Aviation Day 2012 will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission and parking. Aviation Day is an annual community event hosted by the Lee County Port Authority with the purpose of increasing awareness of our airports – Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and Page Field (FMY). The event is held on the ramp on the north side of Page Field off North Airport Road, east of U.S. 41 and south of Colonial Blvd. Parking is available off North Airport Road and U.S. 41 with shuttle bus transportation to the event entrance.
Our featured aircraft this year will be a North American B-25J Mitchell and a Douglas C-47A Skytrain. The B-25J is an American twin-engine medium bomber. This aircraft type trained at Page Field and was used in the Doolittle Raid over Japan. The C-47A is a military transport aircraft delivered to the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943. This plane participated in preparation for the Normandy invasion as well as other missions across Europe, including the famous Berlin Airlift.
Other attractions will include experimental, antique and other general aviation aircraft exhibits, airplane and helicopter rides, performances by a 17-piece big band ensemble, children’s activities, character appearances, clowns, face painting, demonstrations by airport police and fire departments, aviation-themed shopping and exhibitors, refreshments and more.
Though parking and admission are free, we are asking those coming to the event to help our local community by bringing a non-perishable food item. All donations will benefit The Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida whose mission is to overcome hunger in our communities through education and by working in a cooperative effort with affiliated agencies in the procurement and distribution of food, equitably and without discrimination.
We hope you can join us for Aviation Day 2012 on Nov. 3!
